Team Description:

What is Academic Team?  Academic team is a group of students who represent Tates Creek Middle School in the Kentucky Academic Competitions and at the Governor’s Cup Competition.  There are several parts to the academic team.

• Quick Recall – This competition involves answering questions in science, math, social studies, language arts, and arts and humanities.  Team members have buzzers and can buzz in when they know the answer to a question (similar to Jeopardy, but not exactly the same). Four team members compete at a time.  There are three teams, Varsity, Junior Varsity, and 6th Grade.  Your student will be put on a specific team, but may be asked to compete for a different team during a match if needed.  
• Written Assessment – Written Assessments are taken at the Governor’s Cup Events.  Only a few students are chosen from each school to take written assessments in the following areas: math, science, social studies, language arts, arts and humanities, and writing.  Written assessments are a large part of the total score for the Governor’s Cup competition.  These students will be expected to do some studying of material outside of school.
• Future Problem Solvers – Future Problem Solving (FPS) is an internationally recognized, award winning program that encourages critical thinking. FPS fosters investigation, ingenuity, creativity and cooperative learning. KAAC is the sole organization licensed to coordinate FPS in Kentucky.
